Taking Green a step further with your carpet and upholstery

Keep your existing carpet and upholstered furniture longer-

This is often the most overlooked way to help the environment. By keeping your carpet and upholstered furniture longer, you’re saving space in landfills where the old carpet and pad, or discarded furniture will wind up. You’re also saving resources that would be used to produce the new carpet and pad that you install or to make the new furniture that you buy.

Recycle old furniture and carpet when possible-

When it’s time to replace your carpet or upholstered furniture, rather than disposing of it, see if there is a way you can recycle it. This can be as simple as passing furniture to a family member or donating it to a charity. It is a bit more difficult to find a new home for your old carpet but it is possible to reuse it in some cases. Explore your options.

Clean and maintain your carpet and upholstery regularly-

This is where Professor Pyle comes in. By having us clean and protect your carpet and upholstered furniture regularly, they will stay cleaner and without question, last longer. In most cases, regular cleaning with protectant will add several years to the life of your carpet and upholstered furniture. More frequent regular cleaning has far less of an impact on the environment than buying new. Regular cleaning has additional benefits as well. Your carpet will look great and your indoor air quality will almost always improve. We’ll remove things like dust mites, pollen, pet hair, tracked in soils and contaminants, etc. These are all things that have a big impact on the air you and your family breathe.

Use Professor Pyle’s Spot Remover between cleanings-

The best and easiest time to remove a spot or potential stain is right when it occurs. We provide you with a bottle of our spot remover after every cleaning. It’s non-toxic, biodegradable, hypo-allergenic, and contains no bleach, enzymes or soap. Using our spot remover before the spot or spill sets will in most cases help you remove it quickly and easily. This means Professor Pyle can avoid using stronger chemicals that aren’t as friendly to the environment during your next cleaning. All our clients receive free refills of our spot remover. If you run out, call us, we’ll drop off a new one at your door. Just leave the old one for us so we can recycle it.

Don’t replace all your carpet with wood or tile-

A common misconception is that carpet is bad for your health because it traps things like dust, pollen, pet hair, soils, and contaminants, etc. Carpet does trap all these things but this is a GOOD thing. Carpet works like a filter; in fact, it’s the largest filter in your home. Without carpet, all the pollutants end up constantly circulating through the air inside your home. You and your family then wind up breathing it. Regular cleaning will remove the pollutants from your carpet and allow it to continue to filter the air for you. Tile and wood are gaining in popularity as time goes on. It’s easy to clean and looks great. Our recommendation is to find a balance between carpet and hard surface flooring. At a minimum, we suggest keeping carpet in the bedroom areas.

Tip: the less carpet you have, the more often you should change or clean your furnace filter.
